Strengthening a Long-Standing Partnership: Recognising Australia's Support to the Papua New Guinea Defence Force đŸ‡ĻđŸ‡ē⚔️đŸ‡ĩđŸ‡Ŧ

Papua New Guinea and Australia have shared a long history of defence cooperation built on mutual respect, friendship, and regional security. One recent example is Exercise Wantok Warrior 2026, where Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) personnel trained alongside the Australian Army's 3rd Brigade in Townsville, Queensland under the Pukpuk Treaty partnership.

While joint military exercises improve combat readiness and interoperability, the partnership extends far beyond military training.

Over the years, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has made significant contributions to strengthening the capability of the PNGDF through:

  • Professional military education and specialist training.
  • Logistics, engineering, and technical support.
  • Border security and maritime surveillance cooperation.
  • Air transport assistance for operational deployments.
  • Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief during natural disasters.
  • Support for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance of PNGDF barracks and facilities.
  • Air mobility support during Papua New Guinea's National General Elections, helping transport security personnel and election materials to remote parts of the country.
  • Joint exercises that improve operational readiness and strengthen cooperation between both defence forces.

These initiatives have helped build PNGDF's operational capability while enhancing the ability of both countries to respond to emergencies, natural disasters, and regional security challenges.

The relationship is also about people. Thousands of Papua New Guinean and Australian soldiers have trained, worked, and served together over many decades, creating professional friendships and mutual understanding that continue to strengthen both defence forces.

As the second phase of Exercise Wantok Warrior 2026 prepares to take place in Papua New Guinea, it reflects the ongoing commitment of both nations to peace, security, and stability in the Pacific region.

Strong defence partnerships are built on trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility. By working together, Papua New Guinea and Australia continue to strengthen not only their military capabilities but also their enduring friendship for the benefit of both nations and the wider Pacific.

This article is shared for public education and awareness to recognise the value of defence cooperation between Papua New Guinea and Australia. đŸ‡ĻđŸ‡ē🤝đŸ‡ĩđŸ‡Ŧ
